Matthew KingMatthew King, CPB

My name is Matthew King and I am the owner and operator of King Bookkeeping & Consulting. Bookkeeping is one of my passions and I can truly say that I love what I do for a living. I believe in a life of balance and always strive to maintain an attitude of adaptability and flexibility. I believe in being curious and always seeking to learn new things. It has been an exciting and educational journey to get to where I am in both my personal and professional life. Let me tell you a little bit of my story.

I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and have spent the majority of my life up until 2012 living there. I grew up in the suburbs surrounded by canyons in which I spent a fair amount of time as a child. I developed a love of nature and the outdoors which I have carried into my adult life. When I was in my early teens, my parents got divorced. While this was a difficult experience to go through at that age, being the eldest male in the house, with my mother and younger brother, brought with it a level of responsibility that I am grateful to have embraced at an age younger than most do. I continue to carry this sense of responsibility with me in my personal life as well as in my business.

I attended school near where we lived until I reached Jr. High, at which point I transferred to La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, CA. This was a significant point of growth in my life as I would go on to develop many of the skills I would need to create a solid foundation upon which to build in both my academic and later professional careers. It was during this time that I also developed a passion for tennis. I began playing in Jr. High and continue to enjoy both watching and playing the sport today.

After having such a positive experience at a private Jr. High and High School, I chose to attend Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA. While I have always been good at math and enjoyed working with numbers, my passion for business and finance was ignited and encouraged to grow throughout college. This passion would end up shaping my professional career. Going away to college was an exciting experience that taught me how to be self-reliant and develop the skills I would need to transition into the world of a responsible adult.

My professional career has included jobs working as a bookkeeper, where I learned the practical application of the financial knowledge I had learned in college and as a stock trader, where I learned more about investments and the workings of the stock market. After having a couple of jobs I started working in my family’s business. Over the next 10 years I worked my way up from Coordinator to Vice President/Controller to CFO. I was responsible for the entire financial side of the business, from bookkeeping to banking and finance. I was also involved in the operational decisions of the business, providing ideas as well as my opinion when necessary. During this time, we were able to grow the business from 1 location to 5 and increase our revenues over 250%. I learned the responsibilities and intricacies of being a business owner, the challenges, struggles, opportunities, and benefits.

In 2003 I met my future wife Julia. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a positive influence she has been in my life. Through our relationship, I have learned more about myself and have grown more than I ever thought was possible. Being a Financial Advisor for over 10 years, she was able to provide me with even more insight on the financial markets as well as how different people relate to money. She has been and will continue to be the most important person in my life and I thank her for all the help she has been both personally as well as professionally.

For many reasons, in 2012, my family and I decided that it was time to make a big change. We went through the challenging but ultimately rewarding task of selling our business and transitioning to new ownership. Throughout the time I was involved, I learned first-hand how to grow a business, make it more profitable and finally sell it. I believe this information is invaluable both to me as a small business owner and to my clients.

This transition out of the business which I had been engrossed in for a decade allowed me to focus on building my own bookkeeping and consulting business. I believe that all of the experiences I have had over my lifetime give me the ability to provide professional high quality service and insight to my clients. I truly see it as a privilege to help business owners and individuals achieve their goals. I feel this is my calling and I am excited to wake up every day and get to work!
