My name is Matthew King and I am the owner and operator of King Bookkeeping & Consulting. Bookkeeping is one of my passions and I can truly say that I love what I do for a living. I believe in a life of balance and always strive to maintain an attitude of adaptability and flexibility. I believe in being curious and always seeking to learn new things. It has been an exciting and educational journey to get to where I am in both my personal and professional life. Let me tell you a little bit of my story.
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and spent the majority of my life up until 2012 living there. I attended school near where I lived until I reached Jr. High, at which point I transferred to La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, CA. This was a significant point of growth in my life as I would go on to develop many of the skills I would need to create a solid foundation upon which to build in both my academic and later professional careers.
After having such a positive experience at a private Jr. High and High School, I chose to attend Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA. While I have always excelled at math and enjoyed working with numbers, my passion for business and finance was ignited and encouraged to grow throughout college. This passion would end up shaping my professional career.
After graduating in 1998, I spent some time working as a bookkeeper, where I learned the practical application of the financial knowledge I had learned in college, and then as a stock trader, where I learned more about investments and the workings of the stock market. The next major chapter in my professional career began in 2002 when I started working in my family's funeral service business. When I came onboard, the business had only 1 location. Over the next 10 years as Chief Financial Officer, I played an integral role in growing the business to 5 locations with 25 employees and increasing our revenues over 250%.
In 2003 I met my future wife Julia Sky. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a positive influence she has been in my life. Through our relationship, I have learned more about myself and have grown more than I ever thought was possible. With over 12 years experience as a Financial Advisor, she has been able to provide me with even more insight on the financial markets as well as how different people relate to money. She has been and will continue to be the most important person in my life and I thank her for all the help she has provided to me both personally as well as professionally.
For many reasons, in 2012, my family and I decided that it was time to make a big change. We went through the challenging but ultimately rewarding task of selling our business to the largest publicly traded corporation in our industry. Throughout the time I was involved, I learned first-hand how to grow a business, make it more profitable and finally sell it. I believe this information is invaluable both to me as a small business owner and to my clients.
This transition out of the business which I had been engrossed in for a decade allowed me to focus on building my own bookkeeping and consulting business while at the same time moving around the country for a few years, first to Boulder, CO, then San Francisco, CA, then to Austin, TX, until finally settling back in San Diego with my wife Julia and our little puppy Joy.
I now get to help other business owners, like me, build and grow their businesses, while offering my unique skills, talents and abilities to the world. I feel this is my calling and I am excited to wake up every day and get to work!
